The history of AWGSA covers more than two decades, beginning as the Australian Women’s Studies Association and becoming Australian Women’s and Gender Studies Association at the 2006 Melbourne Conference Annual General Meeting.
AWGSA provides a focal point for all Australian universities offering women’s and gender programs at undergraduate and postgraduate level. We maintain strong links with a range of women’s and gender studies organisations, nationally and internationally.
AWGSA sponsors a range of feminist events. The AWGSA PhD Award is awarded every two years to the best Australian feminist doctoral thesis. AWGSA supports an ECR mentoring program that you can access on joining the organisation.
The Executive is elected at each AGM at the biennial conference.
Membership of AWGSA is open to all who agree with its objectives:
- To promote the teaching, study, and research of women’s and gender studies in Australia.
- To be a national voice on women’s and gender studies issues.
- To promote links with other international feminist organisations and associations.
AWGSA Mentor Database
ECR and postgraduate students make up a significant number of AWGSA members. The ECR representatives on the Executive Committee have suggested that mentoring from senior colleagues through our women’s and gender studies network would offer significant collegial and collaborative opportunities for all. If you are interested in offering yourself as a mentoring contact, or you would like to find a mentor, please add your details to our spreadsheet on Google Docs
